Children:
- Our community should relocate to Japan.
- Our community should relocate to Iceland.
- To think thoughts fully uninfluenced by the surrounding society one has to be physically removed from it.
- To make faster intellectual progress, it would help if the community was located more densely together.
- The community would lose a lot of its influence if it doesn't have a strong presence in key geographical locations (e.g. Bay Area).
- It's easier to make scientific progress in countries with fewer regulations.
- The benefits of moving the community won't be realized in time before AGI.
- Moving outside of the US will likely result in cheaper accommodations and living costs.
What does “our community” mean?
To quote Anna: the “aspiring rationality” community; the “effective altruist” project; efforts to create an existential win; etc.
I don’t know of a short phrase to describe that.
I think it’s important for claims to be very clear, and that this one isn’t clear enough.
In particular, I would disagree with the claim if “our community” means “all the people who are fans of the sequences” and I would agree if it means “silicon valley”
This claim is making want a “wrong question” button.
It’s not operationalized enough for me to vote.
Also I think we want a basic argument instead of a bunch of links to related claims.
I would like to see an operationalization.
Who is our community? How many of us should move?
I believe these headings are nonsense. It should instead say something like “Claims that some people think add weight to this claim”, rather than the objective/NPOV-sounding “Supporting claims”. And likewise for opposing claims”.
